The Larder Ballarat – Macarthur Street Larder.

Macarthur Street Larder.

Affectionately known as ‘The Larder Ballarat’ down on the corner of Macarthur Street and Doveton Street North is the Macarthur street Larder. Like many cafes in the Ballarat area, this cafe is made in a converted house. However, the way they have opened up the front area means it has less of a rabbit warren feel than other converted houses. They have removed many of the walls, and the kitchen is set up in the back of the building in a reasonably open feel. Meaning as you sit and relax the smell of the food wafts around.

macarthur street larder macarthur street larder

The menu is varied, focusing on modern fresh Middle eastern inspired food. This is not the place you are going to go if you are after a Parma and Chips. This is the place you go to eat Salads, Lamb Boreks, flatbreads and Pastries. Even in the Children’s menu, there is not a nugget and chip in sight. Instead, children get a choice of toasted sandwiches, Banana Bread, Granola, Bacon and eggs. However, there is Ice-cream for dessert.

macarthur street larder menu

Following on the children’s theme, the Macarthur Street Larder is the perfect place to come with your children with one of the old rooms at the back of the building has been converted to a little playroom, with a huge variety of toys. This room opens up to another large seating area, however, the only drawback is the room outside only has two tables both reasonable size though, so you need to plan ahead and bring some colouring in, in case the tables are already in use.

However, if you are going without children, the front area is large and away from the Children’s room at the back, meaning you can easily sit in the front and relax drinking your coffee.

There is also a great outdoor area perfect for Ballarat Spring and Summertime.

We went for Breakfast and also had an Iced Chocolate and the flavour of the Iced Chocolate was lovely, it was not too sweet but had a beautiful flavour to it, most places you go the iced chocolates end up tasting like plain milk. It was presented lovely too.

macarthur street larder, a perfect place to have an Iced Chocolate.

Breakfast was the bacon, a great mix of fried eggs, bacon, spinach, tomatoes on Turkish Bread. We will definitely be going back to try more of their Lunch menu, I have heard the Lamb Borek is well worth ordering so can’t wait to go back and try it for myself.

Top five things to do in Downtown Disney.

Downtown Disney

When we first went to Disneyland we never realised how amazing the shopping precinct at Downtown Disney is. There are over twenty shops and countless dining opportunities just outside the entrance of the Disneyland park.

Our children (and us) loved downtown Disney, we often grabbed breakfast in the bakery, we had dinner at rainforest cafe, we bought replacement flip-flops from Sanuk, got coffee from Starbucks.

Most mornings we walked to the entrance of Disneyland from our hotel through Downtown Disney, and we have put together our top five things to do in Downtown Disney.

Find the Hidden Mickeys in Downtown Disney

The Disney parks are full of hidden Mickeys, located in the furnishings of the hotels, the parks and Downtown Disney. We had great fun searching for Hidden Mickeys.

Our children were very excited when they found one hidden in the brickwork.

Check out the Lego store

There is something amazing about walking into the second largest Lego shop in America. (Orlando is the largest). The Lego store is an amazing shop with so many different LEGO sets to buy, you can select specific LEGO bricks. There is an interactive play space, there are large models all around the shop.

Build a bear in Downtown Disney

Take a wander into Build a bear and create your own Bear. There are some limited edition Disney designs that you won’t find in a normal Build a bear shop.

This is also a great activity to keep the kids amused when you want a break from the park.

Mickey mouse Build a bear

Have a smoothie at Rainforest Cafe

Every time we head to Disneyland we have multiple smoothies, dinners, and late night snacks at the Rainforest Cafe. Whilst we were excited to hear about the new hotel that will be opening. We were heartbroken to hear that the Rainforest cafe would be closing down to make room for it.

I strongly recommend visiting before it closes to see the huge fish tank, giant animatronic animals, and have one of their amazing smoothies.

Rainforest Cafe - Disneyland Rainforest Cafe - Disneyland

Visit Marceline’s Confectionery

The first thing that hits you as you Walk past Marcelines Confectionery is the amazing smell of fresh confectionery, chocolates, candy apples, flavoured popcorn.

Marceline’s confectionery is the perfect place to pick up a sweet treat for morning tea, afternoon tea or just because.

Disney youtube channels to watch

Planning your trip to a Disney resort?

What Disney youtube channels should you be watching?

We love Disney in our house, ever since we took our oldest two to Disneyland 7 years ago it seems like we have two moods in our house.

1 – We are at a Disney resort or

2 – We are planning our next Disney trip.

Each time we go, the distance between our trips seem to get smaller. There is something addictive about the magic of Disney. Once you go and take your children and see the magic in their eyes, whether they are 2 or 12 you just want to keep going back.

We have a travel goal which is to go to each of the parks around the world, a Disney cruise and stay at Disney Aulani resort. We have managed to tick off the Disney Aulani resort, and we have gone back to Disneyland multiple times and each time we are researching our trip whether for the first time or the third we jump on youtube and begin watching Disney vlogs, we begin researching the rides, the food, the hotels, the merchandise, the wait times. We look through blogs, head to travel agents and get up to date brochures.

The planning is often half the fun.

In further posts, I will explain in detail some of the other ways we research Disney but today I am focusing on our favourite Channels and videos to watch.

Our Favorite Disney Vlogs to watch on youtube

Disneyland Planning Video on youtube (2017)

Disneyworld Planning video on youtube (2017)

Disneyland and Disneyworld have a brilliant DVD that you can watch on youtube that is a comprehensive planning guide for your trip to Disneyland or Disneyworld. The Disneyland video is 35 minutes long, and the Disneyworld is just over an hour long. Found on the channel ResortTV1 it is a

The Disneyland video showcases both Disneyland and California Adventure Park, all the hotels in the Disneyland park, and downtown Disney. Whilst it doesn’t include prices, it shows you enough information so you can begin to dream “Disney”.

The Disneyworld video showcases the four different theme parks of Disney World, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood studios, Disney Animal Kingdoms. It also showcases the Disney Water Parks. Disney’s Blizzard Beach water park and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park. There is also a section on Disney Springs.

Disney youtube channels to follow

Disney Parks

Disney parks is the official YouTube channel for all of the Disney Parks. It’s an official Disney vlog so a great channel to watch exclusive videos from Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line, Aulani Resort & Spa, Disney Vacation Club.

Another favourite playlist is the animation academy where you can learn how to draw your favourite Disney characters.

If you are not sure whether you want to go to Aulani, to Disneyland or Disneyworld. Choose a playlist and imagine being there.

If you know that you are heading to Disneyland then head across to official YouTube channel for the whole Disneyland Resort! More than just the parks, it showcases the whole Disneyland Park, from Disneyland, Disney California Adventure Park, the Downtown Disney District and all the hotels.

We love looking at the Disneyland – Food and Beverage playlist, the Frozen desert video makes us want to go back and get another Dole-whip every time.

Mickey's Fun wheel

For the last two and a half years our children and I have been following the Thingamavlogs page, they were four Disney fans Patrick, Sarah, Leo & Tiff that posted daily posts about Disney. Most of their videos are Disneyland related as they are all live near California. Whilst their site finished up in October 2017, there is a wealth of information on the page, from foods, information on Disney bounding, dapper days.

Our kids loved the Mickey shaped food day when they ate all the Mickey shaped foods they could find in the park.

Mickey pretzel at Disney Aulani resort

The bucket list family

Now the bucket list family are not just Disney vloggers, they are a family of four (almost 5) that have been travelling for the last 90+ weeks around the world, they decided to sell everything and adventure together around the world. All the family is involved in the vlog and they have been to Disneyland, Disneyworld and Disney Aulani resort and they have some great videos showcasing it.

Recently they participated in 30 resorts in 30 days at Disneyworld, where they stayed in Disneyworld for 30 days and stayed at a different resort every night.

Disney Food Blog

One of our favourite things about Disney is the food, from the amazing character experiences, the delicious foods, churros, Mickey-shaped pretzels, waffles, ice creams. The Disney Food Blog showcases all things edible at Disney parks, resorts, and cruise ships. If you love food then Disney Food blog is the Disney youtube channel for you.

Mickey mouse waffle

Fresh baked Disney

Is a great Disney youtube channel that has a mix of fun facts, history of Disneyland, ride-throughs.

Adventures from where you want to be

I have also uploaded a few of my Disney videos, with more to follow from Disneyland and Disney Aulani. Head across to our channel and subscribe.

The Sporting Globe Ballarat

When the Sporting Globe Ballarat was initially slated to open in Ballarat the local media was excited. The newspapers around Ballarat told us that it was going to be one of the largest sport orientated bars in Australia. With a capacity of 450 people, it doesn’t disappoint. Located on the corner of Mair and Lydiard Street (previously Jackson’s and Co) it opened in August 2016, and since then there is always a steady stream of people enjoying the food and ambience for lunch, dinner and drinks.

There is no mistaking its focus with screens located everywhere playing a variety of sports, and 13 individual booths all with their own touchscreen TV’s that can show from 1 to 4 different channels at once. Perfect for watching multiple games of AFL, Basketball, NRL, Cricket, Golf, UFC or whatever sport takes your fancy.

But downstairs is only a portion of The Sporting Globe, upstairs is a function room and heritage balcony perfect for a party or work function, and the third level is a cocktail bar. Every Sunday from 3 – 8 pm the cocktail bar comes alive with Live music, drink specials a perfect way to finish the weekend.

Now when it comes to food in a Sports bar there are a few items on the menu that I would think as standard. Ribs, Wings and Steak and The Sporting Globe doesn’t disappoint, we ordered both the Pork and Beef ribs and they were delicious.

The Sporting Globe Ballarat

They were sticky covered in heaps of sauce. You can choose from Hickory smoked BBQ, Buffalo and Honey Soy.  Served with a side of Apple Slaw and thick cut battered chips, the day we ate them they were delicious.

In need of refreshment then you can choose from 8 beers on tap, 9 Beers in the Bottle, 3 Craft beers. Or if Ciders, Spirits or cocktails are your drink of choice there are plenty to choose from.

There is also a huge range of Non- Alcoholic drinks and Mocktails on offer, the Pineberry Mocktail a favourite of ours.

The Sporting Globe Ballarat

The sporting globe is so much more than a sports bar, during the day it is also a popular spot for lunch with families after they have finished at the movies only a couple of doors down. They have a great selection of kids meal and on Mondays and Tuesday’s kids eat free with a purchase of any main meal. Kids can choose from a Kid’s Parma, Brownlow burger, Calamari or nuggets. These are served with either shoestring fries and sauce or broccoli.

The Sporting Globe Ballarat

Each day they have a different special, called the 7-day Lineup. Our favourite is Fridays when you get 2 desserts for the price of one.

On their website, it has their full menu, opening hours and a way to book a table. If you are wanting to head in on a Friday or Saturday night it is well worth booking ahead as it gets very busy especially when sports events are on.

AMA‘AMA Disney Aulani Resort

“It’s kinda fun to do the impossible” Walt Disney

Sitting at the table of Ama’Ama only metres from the pools of Disney Aulani you really begin to understand the quote.

As you sit in this beautiful restaurant so close to the hustle and bustle of waterslides, rides, rainbow reef and Pool lounges, you feel miles away from it all. Sitting with a cocktail in your hand, the water in view its really is the perfect place to relax and unwind at Disney Aulani Resort.

Ama’Ama is open for breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Breakfast is open 7am – 10:30am, Lunch is 11:30am – 2:30pm, Dinner is 5pm – 9pm

During the day the crowd is varied, from couples, individuals and families, however, at night time it seems to be the place that you are more likely to see parents relaxing together whilst their children are in one of the night time activities at Aunty’s beach house.

Live music plays nightly (except Sunday), and there is nothing better than watching the sunset over Ko Olina Beach with a drink in hand listening to the music playing gently in the background.

We went multiple times both at lunch and dinner and every time the service was great. They were really quick to come around and take our drinks and food order.

Ama’Ama Disney Aulani

Lunch consists of a variety of salads, Soups, Entrees or deserts.

Ama’Ama Disney AulaniAma’Ama Disney AulaniAma’Ama Disney Aulani

Dinner with Donald, with Disney Aulani Character Dining

“Today’s special moments are tomorrow’s memories.” — Genie, The Return of Jafar

Create your own special memories with an enchanting evening at Makahiki Character dining. On selected nights the Menehune get up to mischief with a delectable buffet feast and characters to meet at “Menehune mischief”.

Makahiki Menehune mischief

Join Disney Aulani’s “Uncle” and some cheeky Disney characters for a fun, musical filled evening. The Menehune are the cheeky magical people of Hawaii, mischevious people. The shows are on three nights a week Sunday, Monday and Thursday (Check this hasn’t changed before booking). Instead of normal character Dinner, they have two shows, 5:15 – 6 pm, and 7:15-8pm.  With seating times at 4:30, 4:45, and 5pm for the 5:15 show, and 6:30pm, 6:45pm, 7pm for the 7:30pm show. Before and during the show you will see some characters so make sure you have your camera and autograph book ready.

What to expect at Menehune mischief “Disney Aulani Character dining”

When you arrive similar to the breakfast Character Dining you will be met at the front by a greeter who will confirm all your party is there and get you to sit down and wait to meet Donald.

Dinner with Donald Disney Aulani resort

Similar to breakfast time, there is a professional photographer there ready to take photos of you whilst you are getting autographs, during hi-fives and a more formal photo. Later they come around to your table and you can purchase these for $35, they come with one photo and a disk of all the other photos. (These are not linked to your photopass card).

Once you have your photo taken you sit and wait until someone walks you through to your table. You can order a drink, and grab some great food from the buffet.

Disney Aulani Character Dinner

Food selection

There was a great variety of food on offer at the buffet, from a carvery, salads, plenty of seafood, Oysters, Prawns, Claws, Mussels, Sushi, Tuna, Salmon, etc. Bread, Crab legs, Pizza, fried rice, Pork Loin, Fish, Steak, pasta.

For the Keiki (children) there was macaroni cheese, potato gems (dinosaur eggs) and also beef sliders. (they could also choose any of the normal buffet.

But where they excelled where the desserts. They had a huge selection of desserts, Brownies, cheesecakes, Cookies, Bread pudding, Puddings, Tapioca Pudding, Berries, Seasonal fruit, Chocolate Mousse, Rice Krispies.

Disney Aulani Character DinnerDisney Aulani Character Dinner Disney Aulani Character Dinner Disney Aulani Character Dinner Disney Aulani Character Dinner

At $52 for adults and $25 for children, it is only $3 more than the non-character dinner, so worth booking into the experience.

Like the breakfast, this is different to your traditional Disney character dining at the parks as apart from Donald who you meet on entry you also only have two – three other characters. On our evening we had stitch and chip and dale. Chip and Dale came to our table multiple times, however, Stitch only came once just as we were leaving.

If character dining or buffets are not for you, there are other places to dine at Dinsey Aulani, from table service options at Ama Ama, casual dining at one of the bars, or grab it and go options check out our dining guide to find out more.

Disney Aulani Character Dining Breakfast

Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, dreams are forever.” Walt Disney

Immerse yourself in the Magic of A Disney Aulani Character Dining experience.

Located at the Makahiki restaurant, just downstairs from the lobby is the Makahiki restaurant. A buffet-style Disney dining area that is open for Disney character breakfast every morning. It is open every night however only character dining 3 nights a week.

We were lucky to take our kids to both the character breakfast and dinner experience. Whilst they are different to the character dining you will experience in Disneyland, they are still a magical experience for everyone involved.

Just like booking Dining experiences with any other Disney resort you are able to book your Character dining reservations through the website long before you even get to the resort to make sure you get the perfect time for your booking.

Enjoy the magic of Disney.

What to expect at Disney Aulani Character Dining Breakfast.

disney aulani character dining

When you arrive you are instantly met by a couple of staff at the front counter who confirm your booking and then get you to line up to get a meet and greet with Mickey Mouse. We had to wait about 5-10 minutes both Disney character breakfasts we had booked.

Make sure your kids bring their autograph books, bring a camera. They take some great professional shots for you, but they do not use photo pass, these are separate. The cost was about $35 US for one photo and a disk of the rest of the professional shots taken at the initial meet and greet. They were well worth it every time with over ten photos. The photographer also takes one photo with your camera.

The characters you get to meet are varied. but normally only two (And the initial meet and greet with Mickey). On our first character breakfast, we met Minnie and Pluto. On our second it was Minnie and Goofy.

You have to be patient though as there are quite a few tables and the characters spend a while at each table, we just missed Minnie mouse when we arrived and had well and truly finished eating be they time she came back. Very different from other Disney Character dining when there are lots more characters so you don’t feel like you are waiting for characters.

But at $20 per child and $39 per adult, the price is reasonable so still worth it for a couple of interactions. What they lack in extra characters they make up for with “Auntie”. She adds games, songs, activities, interacts with the tables. She makes sure people who are having birthdays, or anniversaries are celebrated and adds some of the Hawaii Spirit to the Disney environment.

Selection of Food

Now the most important thing for me in a Breakfast buffet is the omelette station, a real buffet breakfast needs an omelette station and the Disney Aulani does not disappoint. The omelettes are made fresh to order and made well with a great selection of meat and vegetables to choose from.

There is also a great variety of fresh fruit, cereals, hot foods, from your typical bacon, eggs, as well as fried rice, miso soup. There is a great range of pastries, bread, pancakes and no Disney buffet breakfast would be complete without the famous Mickey Waffles. But Disney Aulani Character breakfast takes it one step further with Red Velvet Iron man waffles.

Mickey mouse waffleRed velvet iron man Waffle

The highlight for my children through where the Bananas and blueberries in a bucket. I will let the picture do the talking. And the yoghurts that are all served in small containers to minimise wastage.

Overall we loved our breakfast, sure it wasn’t cheap but it was worth going. Personally, we only went twice through our seven days at Aulani and that was enough to experience the magic, enjoy the omelettes and fresh food.

Dinsey Aulani has a great variety of other Disney dining options, including the beautiful table service restaurant Ama Ama. Whilst Makahiki is the only character dining experience in the resort, there are plenty of opportunities to grab a photo with your favourite characters with a Daily meet and greets around the resort.

A Disney Character Breakfast is only one way you can explore the magic of Disney Aulani resort. There are so many more magical things to do and see.

Lakeview Hotel Ballarat

The Lakeview hotel situated on the glorious Lake Wendouree in Ballarat is a great casual family-friendly restaurant in Ballarat. A great place to sit an relax after you finish your 6km walk around the Lake.

Lakeview Hotel Ballarat

We love heading there for breakfast as they make great fresh orange juice. The oranges are kept in the fridge so the juice comes out nice and cold.

Lakeview Hotel

The Lakeview hotel is very family friendly with a good variety of food on the children’s menu and have complimentary colouring in, which we have found a rare commodity in a lot of restaurants nowadays. Most places you have to buy an overpriced colouring-in pack that they finish before the meal comes out. The pictures are a great variety from superheroes, Disney characters, animals on plain white paper.

Lakeview Hotel

The wait staff are friendly and come round quickly after you arrive to make sure you order you can order your drinks even if you are still waiting on others in your party.

Lakeview hotel

It nice to sit and eat your breakfast or lunch watching everyone as the walk Lake Wendouree. Or to reward yourself after a nice walk with a nice cold drink.

Located in the famous Goldfields town of Ballarat is the ” Eclectic Tastes Café and Pantry ”

This gorgeous cafe is the perfect place to stop for breakfast or lunch when you are exploring this beautiful goldfields town.

As the name suggests the decor is a real eclectic mix, the tables lined with paper so children and adults alike can draw whilst they wait for their food and drinks to arrive.

Each time we go the food does not disappoint with great fresh food, and freshly squeezed juices, combined with great service.

It’s easy to get a carpark as its a bit out of town,  only a stone’s through from Lake Wendouree.
