From Woomera to Coober Pedy

Today saw us only needing to travel 400 km to our next stop so allowed us to enjoy a later start to the day.Whilst I stayed back with our two youngest, my husband took our older children for a bike ride to the rocket museum in Woomera, we followed that up with breakfast relaxing on the back of the Jayco Basestation.

Breakfast at woomera

Woomera is an interesting Caravan Park, there really is not much there. You can tell that its a not a holiday destination, more somewhere you stop when you are travelling through. It has what you need but no bells or whistles. However, everyone was very friendly.  Our children loved running around chasing the birds, a great way to stretch the legs after a few long days in the car.

It’s a nice drive from Woomera to Coober Pedy, the road is very well maintained with lots of rest stops along the way.
Take the time to check out island Lagoon just out of Woomera.

Then only 40kms further down the road is Lake Hart a large Salt Lake with a great information board on the explorers Burke and Wills and Stuart, the highway’s namesake.

There is something magical about standing on a Salt Lake, the crystalised salt had a pinkish tinge to it.  We spent ages there exploring the area, reading the signs. trying to picture what it was like when it was a functioning Salt mine.

If you can get past the very friendly flies, it is well worth it.

We travelled on to Coober Pedy, there where some other great opportunities to stop along the way. We love travelling in our Jayco Basestation as whenever the kids needed to stop we could pull over grab a bite to eat and not have to worry about the flies.

The 400 km went very quickly and before we knew it we had arrived at Coober Pedy. We were ready to explore the famous underground city.
